How it’s made:

  • Each weighted quilt insert’s calming effect comes from its weight. This comes from filling each quilt insert with the correct weight of micro glass beads.
  • The glass beads are the size of mustard seeds with smooth edges.
  • Each quilt insert has evenly spaced, individually sewn pockets. These are each filled with an equal weight of micro glass beads. This means that the quilt insert’s weight is evenly distributed across your whole body.
  • We fill each quilt insert with two layers of cotton wadding. This keeps the glass beads evenly spread through each pocket.

Occupational Therapists recommend that a Single Bed weighted blanket be 10% of your body weight.

As the weight is spread over a wider area in a King bed blanket, we recommend adding 2.0kg to the 10% of body weight guideline.

Please use the next weight up if you are “in-between” weights or want to leave some room for a child’s growth.

The calculator below will show you the recommended weight for your blanket.

FAQs

  • How do weighted blankets help relieve anxiety?

Weighted blankets work because they are heavier than an ordinary blanket. The extra weight provides calming Deep Pressure Touch.

Deep Pressure Touch is a firm but gentle consistent pressure.

It triggers two responses in the body that bring feelings of reduced anxiety.

It firstly shuts off the body’s “fight or flight” instinct that is governed by the sympathetic nervous system.

It then activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This causes both the breathing rate and heart rate to slow and the muscles relax.

The end result is that you feel more relaxed and less anxious.

  • How do weighted blankets help you sleep?

The extra weight of a weighted blanket gives your body soothing Deep Pressure Touch. Deep Pressure Touch is constant, gentle pressure that first works to deactivate the body’s sympathetic nervous system (the body’s “fight or flight instinct).

Next, Deep Pressure Touch switches the body’s parasympathetic nervous system on.

The parasympathetic nervous system works to calm the body and mind by slowing the heart rate, reducing the respiration rate and relaxing the muscles. All this helps relax your body so that you can sleep easily and soundly.

  • What does “lies on top of the bed” mean? And why is it important?

The weighted blanket’s area is the same as the top of your bed. We make them this size as studies have shown this maximises the calming effect.

If you prefer the feeling of being cocooned, the please take a look at our weighted quilt insert options.

  • What weight should the weight of the weighted blanket be?

Occupational Therapists recommend that a single bed weighted blanket should be 10% of your body weight. If your weight is “in between” weights or you want to give a child some room for growth, please choose the next weight up.

Larger blankets with a wider area need to be a bit heavier to achieve the same level of calming Deep Pressure Touch.

Each product page contains guidance on the best weight to choose for your blanket.

  • Is there an age restriction for using weighted blankets?

Yes – children younger than two should not use a weighted blanket.

  • Can I use NDIS funding to buy a weighted blanket?

The NDIS funds weighted blankets in some circumstances.

If you are self-managed, you can order online, pay online and then reallocate the funds to yourself. Alternatively, we will send you an invoice and you can make direct payment.

If you are plan-managed, we will send your case manager an invoice that they can submit. (Please ensure that a weighted blanket has already been added to your plan or they will not pay for it.)

If you are NDIA-managed, we will submit the payment request through the portal. Please make sure it has been approved as part of your plan.

We will make your blanket and ship it to you as soon as we receive payment.

  • What causes the weight in the weighted blanket?

Calming Moments’ weighted blankets are available in weights from 1.5kg to 12kg.

The weight is supplied by micro glass beads. These are incredibly fine and – unlike poly pellets – have no sharp edges that could disturb your rest. They are also silent, unlike poly pellets that can make whooshing and rustling noises.

  • Where do you make your weighted blankets?

Calming Moments operates from its factory in Mandurah, WA. As a result, all our weighted blankets are certified Australian-made.

  • What are Calming Moments' weighted blankets made of?

The outside of the weighted blankets is made in your choice of fabric type and colour.

We have a wide range of coloured cottons, sensory raised dot minky and smooth minky.

We sew two layers of cotton wadding inside the fabric. We then sew evenly spaced pockets into the blanket and fill each pocket with an equal weight of micro glass beads.

The cotton wadding helps keep the beads spread evenly through each pocket.

This means your body gets consistent Deep Pressure Touch. This gives you the best calming effect.

  • How to wash your Calming Moments' weighted blanket

All Calming Moments’ weighted blankets are completely machine-washable on cold, gentle cycle if your machine can take the weight. If not, please take it to a laundromat and wash it there. Please do not tumble dry or dry clean.
